An Introduction to Mini Road Racing -Courtesy of M1GP.US
Whether you're interested in improving your riding skills from recently passing your MSF class or have riding experience but are new to track or street riding, M1GP is an excellent choice.
Popular in Japan and other Asian countries and Europe, minis are a common path to riding and racing bigger motorcycles. They are an excellent introduction to motorcycle riding since they help the rider improve basic skills on a closed course (vs. city streets or the canyons) and will increase your learning curve dramatically while reducing the risk of serious injury greatly. Furthermore, by renting a motorcycle while in the 'new rider' phase, you're likely to save your street bike a crash or two and perhaps some considerable cash.
Although most who discover the world of mini road-racing usually get their own bike by the time they make it to the track, M1GP offers bike rentals for new riders on practice days. This is an excellent opportunity to improve your basic riding skills with very little risk and cost, while getting the advantages of closed-course riding and learning. This method of learning with small bikes is not only ideal for young kids, but also for adults - proven in European and Asian countries as well as right here in the USA as the world's top riders started riding on smaller horsepower motorcycles to hone their skills.
Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix is the premier championship of motorcycleroad racing currently divided into three distinct classes: 125cc, Moto 2 (250cc was replaced by the new Moto2, 600cc class in 2010), and MotoGP. Grand prix motorcycles are purpose-built racing machines that are neither available for general purchase nor can be legitimately ridden on public roads; this contrasts with the various production categories of racing, such as the Superbike World Championship, that feature modified versions of road-going motorcycles available to the public.
Mini motorcycles (not to be confused with pocket-bikes) are the platform of our training and racing program which make it ideal street and sport riding for the following reasons:
Affordable (compared to "big bikes") - cost for tires, parts and track fees are dramatically less expensive.
Safer - an error while learning at 25mph will cost much less than at 125mph in both dollars and injury.
Approachable - motorcycles, riding or racing, can be intimidating because of the power and weight of common street bikes. "minis" are suitable for most 5-7 year olds to most full-sized adults (our largest rider, so far - 6'4", 250lbs on a 50cc 6 speed (there are bigger bikes in the mini-classes which won't push the power to weight ratio).
Slower bikes, faster learning. Like many other sports where speed is a factor, by first learning the proper techniques, the speed will follow. Making a mistake, and being able to pick up from the mistake and keep learning cuts the learning greatly without usually more than dust-off and a few scratches.
